Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) has issued a strong warning to foreign leaders who support the Trump administration, particularly in matters of immigration. During an interview on the “Pod Save America” podcast, Raskin threatened that Democrats will not look kindly upon nations that “facilitated authoritarianism in our country” if and when they regain power.
This aggressive stance, particularly directed at El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele, underscores a growing trend of authoritarian behavior within the Democratic Party, even as they claim to be the defenders of democracy.
Raskin’s comments came in the context of El Salvador’s cooperation with the Trump administration’s deportation policies. Specifically, he referenced the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran citizen who was deported to El Salvador despite a 2019 court order that blocked his deportation to that country. Raskin, the Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee, suggested that Democrats should consider cutting off aid to El Salvador in response to Bukele’s actions.
“The whole idea that Bukele doesn’t have any power to return an American prisoner who was sent to him under an agreement where he’s getting paid $6 million by America is ridiculous,” Raskin said. “He’s our legal agent in this dubious arrangement they created. Of course, he’s got the power to return them.”
Raskin’s threatening language reveals a dangerous willingness to undermine American foreign policy for partisan gain. By suggesting that Democrats will punish foreign leaders who cooperate with a duly elected U.S. president, Raskin is not only overstepping his bounds but also damaging the credibility of the United States on the global stage. This approach is particularly concerning given the bipartisan tradition of respecting the foreign policy decisions of the executive branch, regardless of party affiliation.
The hypocrisy in Raskin’s stance is glaring. While Democrats often claim to be the champions of democracy and the rule of law, their threats to democratic leaders who support the Trump administration reveal a different agenda. By labeling the Trump administration’s actions as “authoritarian” and “fascist,” Raskin and his colleagues are engaging in the very behavior they claim to oppose. This double standard not only erodes trust in the Democratic Party but also undermines the legitimacy of their claims to defend democratic values.
Raskin’s comments are part of a broader pattern of authoritarian tendencies within the Democratic Party. From attempts to disqualify political opponents under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to threats against foreign leaders, Democrats are increasingly willing to use punitive measures to silence dissent and maintain power. This approach is antithetical to the principles of a free and open democracy, where political differences are resolved through debate and the ballot box, not through threats and intimidation.
The consequences of Raskin’s threats could be far-reaching. By alienating key allies and undermining legitimate immigration enforcement, Democrats risk damaging America’s standing in the world. Foreign leaders are likely to view such threats as a sign of instability and unpredictability, potentially leading to a reluctance to cooperate with the United States on critical issues. This could have serious implications for national security and international relations.
Raskin also called for “far more work of transnational democratic solidarity” to combat what he perceives as the spread of “lawlessness” and “fascist chaos.” However, this call for solidarity rings hollow when it is accompanied by threats and punitive actions against democratic leaders. True solidarity should be based on mutual respect and cooperation, not on coercion and intimidation.
Raskin’s comments are particularly troubling given his background as a constitutional law professor. His suggestion that the Trump administration is acting like a “gangster state” and his musings about the possibility of sending Trump to a foreign prison are not only inflammatory but also a direct attack on the constitutional order. Such rhetoric undermines the very foundations of American democracy and sets a dangerous precedent for the future.
