Taxpayers in Maine are now financing the construction of new luxurious apartments for illegal immigrants under the new state program.
The apartments, located in Brunswick and managed by the Maine State Housing Authority under the Biden Administration’s Federal Department of Housing and Urban Development, are intended to serve as transitional housing for asylum seekers awaiting work permits.
According to the 2020 Census, Maine, with a median household income of $68,251, has 10.8 percent of its population living below the poverty level. The state is allocating resources to address this issue, with 60 units at Brunswick Landing designated for asylum seekers. Out of these, 24 units are already complete, providing housing for those awaiting work permits.
The National Desk reported that Maine has allocated nearly $3.5 million to cover construction costs and two years of rental support, as well as an additional $100,000 to aid asylum seekers in processing applications and securing work permits. The expectation is that, within that timeframe, the asylum seekers will gain the means to pay for the apartments independently with state support and guidance.
MaineHousing, the agency overseeing the program, will cover the rent for these asylum seekers for up to two years. But, once employed, participants will contribute 30 percent of their rent costs. After this period, the units are expected to transition to a mix of market-rate and affordable housing, unless the state decides to extend the program.
“This is a very unique solution to a very exciting opportunity in our state. We have thousands of folks coming to Maine who want to make Maine home. We’re doing everything we can to help that situation,” stated Dan Brennan, executive director of Maine Housing.
X, formerly Twitter, has become a battleground for debate as news broke about asylum seekers getting luxurious apartments while a growing number of U.S.-born residents find themselves without shelter.
“What a slap in the face of all Maine residents, and all American citizens in fact, especially the homeless,” one posted on X.
Another user criticized the use of taxes to fund the housing of “illegal aliens.” Others also argue that these migrants are given priority over citizens, with some living rent-free for up to two years in a new facility. Some are even suggesting that Maine residents should stop paying taxes or refrain from voting for Democratic politicians who approved this arrangement.
Meanwhile, one asylum seeker named Esther from Nigeria referred to her new home as a “palace” compared to previous accommodations in shelters and hotels.
“In [a] hotel, there are rules and regulations,’ Esther told local reporters. In a shelter, too, we have so many people. We share the kitchen together. We share the restroom together,” she said.
Now critics argue that taxpayer money should prioritize struggling American citizens over non-citizens. Given that Maine, a state with one of the highest property taxes, has faced a surge in homelessness since 2021, with over 4,000 unhoused residents primarily concentrated in and around Portland, the public suggests that the money could be better spent addressing local issues.
