A former prominent Black Lives Matter activist in Rhode Island has publicly announced his support for former President Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election.
Mark Fisher, a former Democrat turned independent voter who co-founded Rhode Island’s Black Lives Matter branch, endorsed Trump during an interview on “Fox & Friends,” in a segment wherein he discussed why Democrats and President Joe Biden are losing the support of Black voters. “It’s the duplicity of the Democrats, the hypocrisy,” said Fisher to host Lawrence Jones. “We’re not stupid. The brothers are not stupid. We understand when someone’s for us and when someone is not, and it’s obvious that the Democratic Party is not for us.”
At a different interview earlier in November, Fisher argued that Democrats “don’t value” African Americans, and that their policies “actually strike at the heart of the Black family.”
“We’ve been used and abused for so long by that party. They don’t value our vote,” he said. “Their policies are basically racist policies. I believe it’s a racist party. Donald Trump is just the opposite. He’s going to tell you how it is. He’s going to give it to you straight.”
“Trump has done more for the Black community than any president I can think of in my lifetime,” he added.
Speaking of Trump on “Fox & Friends,” Fisher argued that a lot of Black Americans who are still registered Democrats or regularly vote for Democrats are “misinformed” about the former president and his policies.
“They don’t really understand because they don’t educate themselves on Donald Trump as a person and his history,” said Fisher, who went on to say that he personally “loves the man.”
“How could you not like a real man?” he said. “How could you not relate to someone like that?’
Fisher argued that if Black Americans do the work of educating themselves regarding Trump and his policy proposals for uplifting all Americans, he believes more and more will come to his side and vote for the former president.
Speaking of Biden, Fisher described him as a “deep disappointment,” adding that he feels Biden’s tenure as president is itself the reason why so many Black Americans feel disaffected and are abandoning the Democrats.
“I think that it will happen on its own, and it’ll be organic,” he said. “I feel like the tide is starting to turn… I feel like a lot of Black people are starting to pivot off of that Democratic plantation. For so long, we’ve been slaves to that party. Actually, we’ve been mental slaves afraid to get off of that plantation.”
Fisher’s endorsement of Trump has been met with outrage. Black Lives Matter Rhode Island co-founder Gary Dantzler claimed he is “disgusted” by Fisher’s remarks, which he described as a major setback for everything the movement supposedly stands for.
“You have good, you have bad and you have evil,” said Dantzler. “Mark Fisher says he represents Black Lives Matter, but he does not represent Black Lives Matter.”
The Black Lives Matter Rhode Island Political Action Committee also condemned Fisher’s endorsement, with spokesperson Harrison Tuttle claiming that Fisher “has never been affiliated” with the organization.
Meanwhile, Joe Powers, chairman of the Republican Party of Rhode Island, described Fisher’s endorsement as a “major win” for Republicans in New England.
“It’s good to hear that we have compatriots who are looking to the Republicans as an answer,” said Powers. “It’s refreshing to hear that you have people who would not normally go that way, actually comes to the realization that it’s the smart move – it makes sense to be a Republican in Rhode Island.”
