The American Values 2024, a super political action committee (PAC) formerly known as the People’s Pharma Movement, has raised a total of $10.25 million to support the the presidential campaign of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
According to Tony Lyons, RFK Jr.’s publisher and the super PAC’s co-chair, the committee initially had $500,000 from Mark Gorton, an advocate for the “health freedom” movement, before renaming it after Kennedy. This proves that the challenge of RFK Jr. against President Joe Biden has gained support from donors on both political parties.
American Values 2024 operates independently from Kennedy’s campaign. Super PACs can openly support or oppose political candidates by soliciting limitless contributions from businesses, labor unions, groups and private citizens. But unlike regular packs, super PACs are prohibited from directly giving money to political candidates.
However, the campaign still seeks financial support to complete its first full fundraising quarter. The campaign sent requests to meet a $5 million goal and proudly announced a $1 million haul within 24 hours.
In addition to American Values 2024, another group supporting RFK Jr. in his presidential campaign, Common Sense PAC, was established in Los Angeles in April by actress Sofia Karstens, known for her involvement in the health freedom movement.
Common Sense PAC organized a successful fundraiser for Kennedy in San Francisco last month, raising nearly $1 million.
The popularity of RFK Jr. in polls can primarily be associated with the political legacy of his family, which includes three Democratic senators, a president and other prominent figures.
In a recent CNN poll, the main reason voters liked RFK Jr. was his famous last name. These surveys suggest that the majority of Democratic voters would prefer almost anyone other than Biden. In Maryland, for example, 41 percent of Democrats preferred their governor, Wes Moore, over Biden. (Related: RFK Jr. likes his chances against Biden in 2024 presidential primaries.)
If RFK Jr. manages to maintain this level of support, it could pose an embarrassment for Biden during the primaries. The potential impact of RFK Jr. might be most influential in New Hampshire, where Biden has already alienated core supporters. New Hampshire Democrats fear Biden may skip their primary or that enough independent voters angry with him may cast protest votes for Kennedy.
Similarly, RFK Jr. has received support from conservative figures like Elon Musk and David Sacks.
Dennis Kucinich, a former left-wing congressman and Cleveland mayor, said the diverse views of RFK Jr. make him better positioned to win a general election than Biden. Kucinich described Kennedy as someone who can bring about the unity that most Americans desire, with a language of conciliation and compassion.
While the Biden campaign has been relatively quiet since its formal rollout in April, White House officials are planning a summer tour branded as “investing in America.” Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, their spouses and cabinet members will travel across the country to promote the legislative results achieved under his administration.
The hope is that these trips will generate positive local news coverage, followed by substantial advertising efforts to educate Biden-skeptical Democrats and independent voters about the president’s accomplishments.
While it is not uncommon for incumbent presidents to face dissent within their party before renomination, Biden’s allies, including Representative Robert Garcia of California, a Democrat and Biden’s national advisory board, dismissed the campaign of RFK Jr. as a joke and his worldview as dangerous.
The White House, the Democratic National Committee and Biden’s re-election campaign have not commented on Kennedy, coordinating efforts to avoid elevating his campaign. They have opted not to engage with RFK Jr. directly to avoid giving him undue attention.
Nevertheless, the early strength of RFK Jr. underscores weaknesses within the current administration that Republicans are eager to exploit.
