Another major corporation could soon be leaving Chicago due to escalating crime: the McDonald’s fast-food chain.
McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski says his company’s employees feel unsafe and no longer want to come to work. This includes corporate employees at the main offices of McDonald’s, which are located in the heart of the Windy City.
As we recently reported, Caterpillar has already fled Chicago for Texas. Boeing did the same thing.
Already in 2022, there have been more than 494 homicides in Chicago. This is about 100 more deaths than what occurred during the first eight months of 2019. Burglaries are also up at least 36 percent, while thefts have increased 70 percent compared to last year.
Enemy number one as far as the city’s economic viability goes is Mayor Lori Lightfoot, whose “social justice” mindset has left the city in shambles. Protests quickly became riots and looting under her watch in the aftermath of George Floyd, and things have never recovered.
Lightfoot also heavily oppressed Chicago with restrictive covid lockdowns and mandates, which appears to be correlated to the city’s continued spike in crime.
Chicago was already one of the most violent cities in America, but things have gotten dramatically worse under Lightfoot, who stripped the city’s policy budget by $80 million in 2020 due to George Floyd.
One year later, Lightfoot came groveling to federal law enforcement, begging them for assistance with spiraling crime throughout Chicago.
“The truth is, it’s more difficult today for me to convince a promising McDonald’s executive to relocate to Chicago from one of our other offices than it was just a few years ago,” Kempczinski laments.
It simply does not make sense to move to Chicago and risk getting mugged or shot while going to work – or possibly while at work. This is a serious risk in Chicago, and corporate executives know it.
To be fair, crime is a problem in many American cities, including those located in “red” states. But Chicago is an especially dangerous city that is only getting worse under Lightfoot’s leadership.
“One gets the sense that as bad as things are in blue cities, they could get a whole lot worse in the near future should a single ‘black swan’ event take place,” reports Zero Hedge.
“This is not to say that some cities in red states don’t have their share of crime. Houston, Texas, for example, also has a problem with higher homicide rates the past couple of years, but keep in mind, Houston is also run by Democrats.”
The official murder capital of the United States is actually New Orleans, located in deep-red Louisiana. But once again, New Orleans is controlled by Democrats with a similar mindset to Lightfoot.
“Businesses run on thin margins,” wrote a commenter about why it is so important for companies to operate in safe, low-crime areas. “Theft and crime make businesses very unprofitable.”
“Chicago is the new Detroit,” added another about how back in the 1980s, one could safely walk around Wrigley Field at night – but not so much anymore.
“This is the same thing that killed Detroit 40 year ago,” added another. “Crime and an idiot mayor named Coleman Young.”
Someone else joked that if Al Capone was still alive and running bootlegging, gambling, prostitution, money laundering, etc. operations, “even he would leave Chicago.”
“If Al Capone were still running the rackets, he could straighten Chicago out,” wrote someone else. “McD’s wants peace and quiet around their headquarters and their stores they’d just pay the mafia and things would calm down fast.”
